Lee Hazlewood

February 7, 2010 > The Sound Monkey

Lee Hazlewood was a genius. He made bizzare country-pop. It’s only when you hear him that you realise how influential he has been on modern music (everything from The Moldy Peaches to Ladytron). He died in 2007.

My favourite songs were his earlier ones where he’d tell a story about a local character-  the people he talks about are hilarious,  a mix of larger-than-life and utterly bland. In fact, most of them sound like Hazlewood met them in a mental home.

He often collaborated with Frank Sinatra’s daughter, Nancy, their most famous song being ‘These Boots Were Made For Walking’. I think it got to number one both in the States and here. Also, the beautiful ‘Some Velvet Morning’.

He had a wonderful baritone voice and tells a great story. He is well worth checking out
