Cocorosie - Trinity

If our world is one of contradictions, one moment wonder, the next ugly destruction, then Cocrosie are perhaps the band for modern times.
On paper, their bizarre mix of opera, hip-hop, samples from toys and folk shouldn’t work, but it does, and nowhere is it more effective than live. The sisters themselves are stunning. All willowy limbs, California tans and fancy dress and on stage they ooze an utterly captivating, playful charm.
Like a drug-fueled fairytale the songs meander and weave tales of mischief; harps, pianos, broken toys, percussion and a beatboxer switching from slow, vocal-led songs, to pounding hip-hop rhythms and back again like a fantastical daydream.
The band played for 1 hour and 45 minutes but it seemed, to a (wo)man, that every member of the audience was totally transfixed- expressions of awe, joy and bewilderment all on show.
Come the show’s close it was smiles all round, having enjoyed one of the best gigs I’ve been too for a long, long time.
Sure, bad things happen in this world, the Tories even get back into Downing Street, but at least with bands like Cocorosie around things seem a little more beautiful, even if it is just for a few hours.
